Tribute to the Great Jack Dyer

"Heaven's football team can now take the field because your captain has just arrived." -- Richmond cheersquad banner

When I heard of the passing of Jack Dyer on 23 August 2003, I knew I wanted to make an on-line tribute to this Richmond Football Club legend. Not only this Richmond Football Club legend, but a legend of the entire League Australian Rules Football. He is that great of a man and a player.

The challenge I face is how to say what has already been said brilliantly by those who knew and loved Jack Dyer. I can only put it into terms that have relevance to me. I can write about Jack Dyer in terms of my cherished Seattle Seahawks and the National Football League. For you see, Jack Dyer is to Richmond what Steve Largent is to the Seahawks.

Times 10.

Imagine a player so memorable, so skilled, so beloved that he is remembered in the hearts and minds of players and fans 50+ years after his retirement.

50+ years!!!

Imagine a player and coach with these credits to his name:

Inaugural member of the Australian Rules Football
Hall of Fame

Played in two Premierships: 1934, 1943
(NFL equivalent: Super Bowl)

Won the Richmond Best and Fairest 6 times: 1932, 1937, 1938, 1939, 1940, 1946
(NFL equivalent: The Steve Largent Award)

Leading goalkicker twice:
1947, 1948

Represented the Victorian League 14 times
(NFL equivalent: Pro Bowl)

Coached the Tigers for 11 years: 1941-1952 (225 games)
(Has not been done in Seahawks history)

Played for the Tigers for 18 years: 1931-1949 (312 games)
(Has not been done in Seahawks history)

Kicked 443 goals for the
Richmond Tigers

I've (obviously) only seen Mr Dyer in video replays, but I've seen enough of them and I've heard enough testimonials to have already become endeared to him.

God bless Jack Dyer. May he live forever in the hearts of Richmond fans everywhere.
